Administered by Cricket Victoria, it is one of the six founding teams of the Sheffield Shield and one of the most successful domestic teams in Australian domestic cricket history. The team's primary home grounds are the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground and the historic Junction Oval in St Kilda.

History

The team's origins trace back to the mid-19th century, with its first recorded match against Tasmania in 1851. Victoria was a founding member of the Sheffield Shield upon its inception in the 1891–92 season, immediately establishing a fierce rivalry with New South Wales. The early 20th century saw the rise of legendary players like Bill Ponsford and the influential captain Bill Woodfull. The post-war era was dominated by figures such as Neil Harvey and Ian Johnson, while the late 20th and early 21st centuries have been marked by sustained success under captains like Dean Jones and coaches including John 'Shooter' Scholes. In limited-overs cricket, they have secured the Marsh One-Day Cup on six occasions. The state's Big Bash League success is channeled through its city-based teams, with the Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades, and formerly the Victoria Bushrangers having claimed three titles combined. Notable tournament victories also include the now-defunct KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.

The team's primary and most famous home is the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), one of the world's great sporting stadiums and a regular host of Sheffield Shield finals and Ashes Tests. For many first-class matches, the team utilizes the more intimate Junction Oval, located in the suburb of St Kilda, which has a rich cricket history dating back to the 1880s. Other significant venues used throughout the state's history include the Eastern Oval in Ballarat and the Kardinia Park in Geelong, which has hosted Sheffield Shield fixtures. The Melbourne Cricket Ground also serves as the headquarters for Cricket Victoria.

Historical greats include batting stalwarts Bill Ponsford and Neil Harvey, and legendary leg-spinner Bill O'Reilly.
