The initiative comprises two distinct buildings: a museum at Stratford Waterfront and a collections and research centre at Here East, aiming to open in 2025.

History and development

The project emerged from the legacy plans for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park following the 2012 Summer Olympics, conceived as part of the broader East Bank development alongside institutions like Sadler's Wells, BBC, and University College London. The Victoria and Albert Museum's involvement was formally announced as part of a government-backed initiative to decentralize cultural assets from central London. Key milestones included securing funding from the Mayor of London and the London Legacy Development Corporation, with significant support from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The development has been managed in close collaboration with the London Borough of Newham and other stakeholders to ensure local community benefits, with construction progressing through the early 2020s despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Architecture and design

The two buildings are designed by the acclaimed Irish architecture firm O'Donnell + Tuomey, winners of an international design competition. The museum building at Stratford Waterfront features a distinctive saw-tooth roof profile and is clad in a textured, reddish-brown brick, drawing inspiration from the area's industrial heritage and the River Lea. Its interior is organized around a series of interconnected gallery spaces and a central public hall, designed to offer views towards the ArcelorMittal Orbit. The separate collections and research centre at Here East, known as the V&A East Storehouse, adopts a more utilitarian aesthetic, with its design focusing on transparency and accessibility, allowing visitors to see conservation and curatorial work in action. The landscape and public realm integration with the wider Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park was developed in consultation with LDA Design.

Collections and exhibitions

The institution will provide unprecedented access to the Victoria and Albert Museum's vast holdings, showcasing items rarely displayed before. The museum building will host a dynamic programme of temporary exhibitions and permanent displays drawn from global collections spanning art, design, fashion, and performance. The V&A East Storehouse will adopt an "open storage" approach, presenting over 250,000 objects, 350,000 books, and 1,000 archives in a visible, explorable manner. Key collection areas to be featured include photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre and performance archives, and product design. Inaugural exhibitions are expected to explore themes of global making, social design, and digital creativity, featuring works by artists and designers from Yinka Shonibare to Mary Quant.

Public engagement and programming

A core mission is to engage new and diverse audiences, particularly communities in East London. This involves an extensive collaborative programme developed with local groups, schools, and artists, including partnerships with organizations like Create London and Foundation for Future London. The programming strategy emphasizes co-creation, with plans for live performances, maker workshops, digital labs, and community festivals. The V&A East Storehouse will offer behind-the-scenes tours, hands-on research opportunities, and open conservation studios. An active digital engagement plan aims to connect with global audiences through online collections and virtual experiences, extending the reach of the physical site in Stratford.
