University of Madras Library. Established alongside the University of Madras in 1857, it is one of the oldest and most significant academic libraries in South Asia. History

The library's foundation was laid under the auspices of the University of Madras, which was incorporated by an Act of Parliament of the British Raj. Its early collections were significantly enriched by donations from prominent figures like S. R. Ranganathan, the father of library science in India, who also served as its librarian. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it acquired valuable manuscripts and publications from the Asiatic Society and the Madras Literary Society. The library played a pivotal role during the Indian independence movement, preserving materials related to the Indian National Congress and leaders like C. Rajagopalachari. Its growth mirrored the expansion of the university's faculties, including the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts.

The library houses a distinguished collection of over 500,000 volumes, including rare books, journals, and manuscripts. Its special collections feature priceless palm-leaf manuscripts, early printed books from the British East India Company era, and a complete set of the Madras Gazette. It holds significant works in Dravidian languages like Tamil and Telugu, alongside extensive holdings in Sanskrit and English literature. The repository includes the personal papers of notable alumni and faculty, such as C. V. Raman and S. Radhakrishnan. It also maintains a comprehensive collection of Government of India publications and doctoral theses from the university.

The library provides a wide array of services, including digital access through its membership in the INFLIBNET consortium and the National Digital Library of India. It offers document delivery, reference services, and inter-library loan facilities with partners like the Connemara Public Library and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Modern amenities include computerized cataloging, electronic resource centers, and Wi-Fi-enabled reading halls. It conducts regular user orientation programs and workshops on information literacy. Specialized services support researchers from the university's departments and affiliated colleges across Tamil Nadu.

Architecture and location

The main library building is situated within the university's historic Chepauk campus in Chennai, near the Marina Beach and the Fort St. George. The structure exemplifies colonial-era architecture, with later additions blending modern functional design. Its reading rooms and stack areas are designed to accommodate its vast collections and growing number of users. The library's location places it in close proximity to other major knowledge institutions, including the Anna University library and the Theosophical Society.

Administration and governance

The library operates under the overall authority of the University of Madras Executive Council and the Senate. Day-to-day administration is led by a University Librarian, currently Dr. S. Gopinath, who reports to the Vice-Chancellor. Policy and development are guided by a Library Committee comprising senior faculty from various departments like the Department of History and the Department of Physics. Its budget and acquisitions are overseen in accordance with the statutes of the University Grants Commission.
