Université de Lyon. It is a major center for higher education and research in France, formed as a community of universities and establishments (COMUE). Located primarily in the metropolis of Lyon and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, it federates twelve member institutions and numerous associated partners. This strategic alliance aims to enhance the international visibility and collaborative potential of its academic and scientific ecosystem, which is one of the largest in the country.

History

The origins of higher education in the city trace back to the founding of the University of Lyon in 1808, established by a decree from Napoleon Bonaparte. This original institution was later divided in 1971 into three separate universities: Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, Lumière University Lyon 2, and Jean Moulin University Lyon 3. The drive for greater coordination led to the creation of the Pôle de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur (PRES) in 2007, a precursor to the current structure. Following the French law on higher education and research (2013), this entity was reconstituted as the Université de Lyon, a COMUE, to better streamline governance and foster interdisciplinary projects across its vast network.

Member institutions

The core of the federation consists of twelve founding members, including major universities and prestigious specialized schools. Key university members are Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 (science, health), Lumière University Lyon 2 (humanities, social sciences), and Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 (law, management). It also encompasses grandes écoles such as the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, the École Centrale de Lyon, and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon. Other significant members include the VetAgro Sup, the Université Catholique de Lyon, and the École nationale des travaux publics de l'État.

Academic profile

The alliance offers a comprehensive and diverse range of academic programs, from undergraduate degrees to doctoral studies, across a wide spectrum of fields. It is particularly renowned for its strengths in the life sciences, chemistry, physics, and engineering, notably through the activities of Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 and the École Centrale de Lyon. In the humanities, it excels in areas like history, linguistics, and philosophy, driven by Lumière University Lyon 2 and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. The federation also provides strong programs in law, political science, and business administration through Jean Moulin University Lyon 3.

The site is a powerhouse for scientific research, hosting numerous CNRS laboratories and other major research organizations like INSERM and INRAE. It is a key player in several fields, including infectious diseases research at the International Center for Infectiology Research, nanotechnology at the Institut des Nanotechnologies de Lyon, and artificial intelligence within the Laboratoire d'InfoRmatique en Image et Systèmes d'information. The ecosystem is strongly oriented towards innovation and technology transfer, supported by entities like the Lyonbiopôle competitiveness cluster and the SATT Pulsalys.

The institutions are spread across multiple campuses and sites throughout the Lyon metropolitan area and the wider Rhône department. Major hubs include the La Doua campus in Villeurbanne, which hosts Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, and the Berges du Rhône site in central Lyon. Other significant locations are the Porte des Alpes campus in Bron and Saint-Étienne, and the historic buildings of the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in the Monplaisir-Lumière district. The federation also manages shared resources like the Bibliothèque Diderot de Lyon.

International relations

The Université de Lyon maintains a vast network of global partnerships, participating in programs like Erasmus+ and holding membership in the European University Association.
