US Navy. The United States Navy is the maritime service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the eight uniformed services. It is the largest and most capable navy in the world, with a primary mission to maintain, train, and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression, and maintaining freedom of the seas. Tracing its institutional origins to the Continental Navy of the American Revolutionary War, it was formally established by the United States Congress in 1794 and has since played a central role in securing American interests and projecting power globally.

History

The Navy's origins lie in the Continental Navy, authorized by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 during the American Revolutionary War, with heroes like John Paul Jones achieving fame. Following a post-war dissolution, it was re-established in 1794 to combat Barbary pirates in the First Barbary War. The War of 1812 saw pivotal frigate duels like that of USS Constitution and established the service's tradition. The American Civil War introduced ironclads like USS Monitor and heralded the shift from sail to steam. Its transformation into a global power began in the late 19th century, influenced by strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan, and was cemented by victories in the Spanish–American War and the Great White Fleet's world cruise. It achieved decisive supremacy in the Pacific War during World War II, with landmark battles at Midway and Leyte Gulf. The Cold War era was defined by nuclear deterrence, with the development of ballistic missile submarines and carrier groups confronting the Soviet Navy, while the post-Cold War period has focused on power projection and counter-terrorism in conflicts from the Gulf War to ongoing operations in the Middle East.

Organization

The Navy is a component of the United States Department of the Navy, headed by the civilian United States Secretary of the Navy, and is itself part of the United States Department of Defense. Operational command flows from the President of the United States, through the Secretary of Defense, to the United States Secretary of the Navy and the military head of the service, the Chief of Naval Operations. The primary operational forces are organized under several unified combatant commands, most notably United States Indo-Pacific Command and United States Central Command. The fleet is divided into numbered fleets, such as the United States Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific and the United States Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Major administrative and training commands include United States Naval Forces Europe-Africa, Naval Air Systems Command, and the United States Naval Academy.

Personnel

As of 2023, the Navy has approximately 349,593 active duty personnel and 101,583 in the Selected Reserve. Officer accession occurs primarily through the United States Naval Academy, Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps programs at universities like University of Texas at Austin, and Officer Candidate School. Enlisted personnel enter through Military Entrance Processing Stations and complete training at locations such as Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. The service is composed of distinct communities, including Surface Warfare Officer, Naval Aviator, Submarine Warfare, and the United States Navy SEALs. Senior enlisted leadership is provided by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy. Personnel serve on a wide array of platforms, from aircraft carriers to guided-missile submarines, and are supported by the United States Navy Nurse Corps and the Judge Advocate General's Corps, U.S. Navy.

Equipment

The Navy operates one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced fleets, with roughly 290 deployable battle force ships. The service is modernizing with new classes such as the Columbia-class submarine and the Constellation-class frigate.

Bases and facilities

The Navy maintains a global network of bases and facilities critical for deployment, training, and maintenance. Major continental United States fleet concentration areas include Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, home to the United States Fleet Forces Command, and Naval Base San Diego in California. Key strategic shipyards are Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
