USS San Jose (AFS-7)

USS San Jose (AFS-7) was a Mars-class combat stores ship of the United States Navy. Named for the city of San Jose, California, it served as a critical underway replenishment vessel for over two decades. Its primary mission was to deliver refrigerated stores, dry provisions, and other supplies to U.S. Seventh Fleet units operating across the Pacific Ocean.

Construction and commissioning

The vessel's keel was laid down on 15 April 1969 at the General Dynamics shipyard in San Diego, California. It was launched on 6 June 1970, sponsored by Mrs. Daniel J. Murphy, and officially commissioned into active service on 23 October 1971. Following its sea trials, the ship was assigned to the Military Sealift Command for operational duties, joining the United States Pacific Fleet.

Service history

Homeported at Naval Station Guam for much of its career, the ship operated extensively throughout the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. It provided vital logistical support during the final years of the Vietnam War, conducting replenishment operations for carriers like the USS ''Enterprise'' and other Task force vessels. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it made regular port visits to locations such as Subic Bay in the Philippines, Yokosuka in Japan, and Perth in Australia.

The ship's duties included participating in major multinational exercises like RIMPAC and providing sustained support during periods of heightened tension, including operations in the Persian Gulf. Its crew worked alongside Marine detachments and Helicopter Combat Support Squadron units to execute vertical replenishment missions. In 1988, it was directly involved in Operation Earnest Will, aiding in the protection of Kuwaiti tankers during the Iran–Iraq War.

Decommissioning and fate

After over 22 years of continuous service, the ship was decommissioned on 30 September 1993 at Pearl Harbor. Its name was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 12 January 1994. The vessel was subsequently transferred to the Maritime Administration and placed in the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Suisun Bay, California. In 2006, it was sold for scrapping under the National Defense Authorization Act and towed to Texas for dismantling.

Awards and legacy

For its consistent service, the ship earned several unit awards, including the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, and multiple National Defense Service and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal ribbons. It is remembered as a key component of the United States Navy's "Service Force," enabling extended forward deployments for the Seventh Fleet. The ship's legacy is carried on by the later USNS ''San Jose'', a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship that continues the vital mission of naval logistics.
