USS North Carolina (SSN-777)

USS North Carolina (SSN-777) is a *Virginia*-class attack submarine in service with the United States Navy. The fourth vessel of its class, it is named for the State of North Carolina and is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Commissioned in 2008, the submarine is designed for a broad spectrum of open-ocean and littoral missions, including anti-submarine warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and special operations support.

Design and construction

The submarine was built as part of the Block II procurement of the *Virginia*-class by a team led by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut. Its design incorporates significant technological advancements over the preceding *Los Angeles*-class, including a fly-by-wire ship control system, a large spherical bow sonar array, and a photonic mast system replacing traditional periscopes. The construction process utilized modular techniques, with sections built by Northrop Grumman Newport News in Virginia before final assembly at Electric Boat. The vessel's reactor plant is a S9G pressurized water reactor, designed for the ship's expected 33-year service life without refueling. The keel was laid on 22 May 2004, and the submarine was launched on 5 May 2007, sponsored by Mrs. Linda Bowman, wife of former Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Frank Bowman.

Operational history

Following its commissioning ceremony on 3 May 2008 at Wilmington, North Carolina, the submarine transited to its assigned homeport of Naval Submarine Base New London. After completing post-shakedown availability and intensive training, including Prospective Commanding Officer exercises, *North Carolina* commenced its first full operational deployment in 2010. The boat has since executed multiple deployments to the U.S. European Command and U.S. Pacific Command areas of responsibility, conducting vital fleet exercises and forward-presence missions. Key operations have included participation in multinational exercises like Exercise Baltic Operations and integration with Carrier strike groups. In 2012, the submarine completed an extended deployment to the Western Pacific, operating in the South China Sea and making port visits to Japan and Guam. It has also been routinely involved in real-world Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tasks supporting national security objectives.

Commanding officers

The submarine's first commanding officer was Commander Mark E. Davis, who oversaw its final construction, commissioning, and initial operational preparations. Subsequent commanding officers have included Commander Richard D. Rhinehart, who led the boat on its maiden deployment, and Commander Gary J. Montalvo. Later command was assumed by Commander Jeffrey L. Anderson and Commander Jeffrey M. Oien. The leadership of these officers has been central to the vessel's operational successes and its recognition with multiple awards. Command tours typically last approximately 24 months, with officers selected from the elite Naval Submarine School and having extensive experience on other attack submarines like the *Seawolf*-class.

Awards and recognition

Throughout its service, USS *North Carolina* has been recognized with several unit awards for operational excellence. These include the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Battle "E" Efficiency Award, awarded by the Commander, Submarine Forces Atlantic for being the most combat-ready submarine in its squadron. The boat and its crew have also earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon for its numerous forward deployments. The submarine's motto, "First in Freedom," honors its namesake state's role in the American Revolution and reflects the crew's commitment to maintaining maritime freedom of navigation.
