The university's origins trace to 1911 with the establishment of Tsinghua College, funded by the remission of part of the Boxer Rebellion indemnity by the United States. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, it was reorganized into a polytechnic institution focusing on engineering, absorbing departments from Yenching University and other schools. During the Cultural Revolution, its academic activities were severely disrupted. Since the Chinese economic reform initiated by Deng Xiaoping, it has transformed into a comprehensive research university, playing a central role in national projects like the 863 Program and Belt and Road Initiative.

Campus

The main campus is situated in the Haidian District of Beijing, on the former site of the Qing dynasty royal garden known as Qinghua Yuan.
