Strategically situated on the eastern side of the Son Tra Peninsula, the port benefits from direct access to the deep waters of the South China Sea. This prime location offers significant advantages for international shipping lanes connecting Southeast Asia with major markets in Northeast Asia and North America. The port complex features six main berths with a total quay length exceeding 800 meters and a designed draft of up to 11 meters, allowing it to receive container ships up to 45,000 DWT and large cruise liners. Key facilities include modern container yards, warehouses, specialized cargo handling equipment, and a dedicated terminal for the burgeoning cruise ship industry, which brings tourists to attractions like Hoi An Ancient Town and the Imperial City of Huế.

Port operations are managed by the state-owned Da Nang Port Joint Stock Company, which oversees a comprehensive suite of maritime services. These include full-container load and less-than-container load services, break-bulk cargo handling for project cargo and machinery, and roll-on/roll-off operations. The port serves as a vital hub for exports from the central provinces, notably furniture, textiles, seafood, and electronics, while also handling imports of raw materials, machinery, and consumer goods. It maintains regular shipping connections with major international ports such as Port of Singapore, Port of Hong Kong, and Port of Kaohsiung. Furthermore, it has become an increasingly important homeport and port of call for major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean International and Princess Cruises.

The port is a fundamental engine for the regional economy of central Vietnam and a critical component of the national North–South Economic Corridor initiative. It directly facilitates trade for industrial zones in Da Nang, Quang Nam Province, and Thua Thien Hue Province, reducing logistics costs and improving supply chain reliability for manufacturers. By enabling efficient export pathways, it supports key national industries and strengthens Vietnam's position in global value chains. The port's cruise terminal significantly boosts the tourism sector, a cornerstone of Da Nang's economy, by channeling international visitors to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and coastal resorts along the central coast.

Future development

Future development plans are closely aligned with the national maritime strategy and the master plan for the Da Nang key economic zone. Priorities include further deepening the navigation channel and berths to accommodate larger post-Panamax vessels, expanding container storage capacity, and enhancing digital port management systems through initiatives like the national Single Window mechanism. There is also a focus on developing integrated logistics centers and improving hinterland connectivity via upgrades to National Route 1A and linkages to the North–South Expressway. These investments aim to solidify the port's role as a premier international gateway and to support the sustained economic growth of the central region amidst increasing global trade competition.
