The Go-Go's are an American new wave band formed in Los Angeles in 1978. They are celebrated as the first all-female band that wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to achieve a number-one album on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart. With a string of infectious pop hits, the group became a defining act of the early 1980s and a pioneering force for women in rock music.

History

The band coalesced from the Los Angeles punk rock scene, with founding members Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Jane Wiedlin (guitar), and Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar) joining forces. After early lineup changes, they solidified with the addition of bassist Kathy Valentine and drummer Gina Schock. Their debut album, Beauty and the Beat (1981), released on I.R.S. Records, became a surprise commercial smash, topping the ''Billboard'' 200 and spawning the hit singles "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat". Subsequent albums like Vacation (1982) and Talk Show (1984) continued their success, though internal tensions led to their initial breakup in 1985. The group has reunited periodically for tours and recordings, including for the 1990 FIFA World Cup song "The Whole World Lost Its Head" and the later studio album God Bless The Go-Go's (2001).
