Plot

In the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis, British businessman Greville Wynne is reluctantly recruited by MI6 officer Dickie Franks and CIA agent Emily Donovan. His mission is to establish a covert relationship with Oleg Penkovsky, a colonel in Soviet military intelligence who wishes to defect and provide crucial information about Nikita Khrushchev's nuclear capabilities. Under the guise of trade delegations, Wynne travels to Moscow and London, smuggling Penkovsky's photographed documents, which reveal the missile gap and help John F. Kennedy navigate the crisis. After Penkovsky is betrayed, Wynne is captured by the KGB in Budapest, subjected to a show trial, and sentenced to prison, where he endures brutal conditions before a high-stakes prisoner exchange secures his release.

Production

The project, originally titled "Ironbark," was developed by FilmNation Entertainment and 42, with a screenplay by Tom O'Connor. Dominic Cooke, known for his work at the Royal Court Theatre, was hired to direct. Principal photography began in December 2018, with locations including Prague, which stood in for Moscow and London, and Liverpool. Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt aimed for a period-authentic look, while composer Abel Korzeniowski provided the score. Benedict Cumberbatch, also a producer through his company SunnyMarch, undertook significant weight loss to portray the imprisoned Wynne.

Release

The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2020. Lionsgate acquired distribution rights for the United Kingdom, where it was released in October 2020, while Roadside Attractions handled its release in the United States in March 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its theatrical rollout was staggered, and it was later made available on digital platforms and VOD services.

However, the character of Emily Donovan, a composite of several CIA officers, is fictionalized. The timeline of events is condensed, and the personal relationship between Wynne and Penkovsky is heightened for emotional impact. The film's depiction of the KGB's interrogation methods and the prisoner exchange at the Glienicke Bridge is broadly accurate, though simplified.
