History

The concept for the institution emerged from community leaders in San Jose seeking to create a public venue reflecting the innovative spirit of Silicon Valley. It opened its doors in 1998, with initial support from the City of San Jose and prominent figures in the tech industry. Early exhibits were developed in collaboration with organizations like NASA and Stanford University, establishing a foundation of credible, experiential learning. A significant expansion and renovation project was completed in 2019, dramatically transforming its galleries and public spaces to address contemporary topics like bioscience, cybersecurity, and environmental sustainability.

Exhibits and programs

Permanent galleries feature interactive experiences such as *The Tech Studio*, a maker space, and *BioTinkering Lab*, which explores genetic engineering and microbiology. The *Cyber Detectives* exhibit, developed with input from the NSA, challenges visitors with puzzles based on real-world cryptographic principles. Its renowned IMAX dome theater, one of the largest in the West Coast, presents documentaries on topics ranging from space exploration to ocean ecosystems. Its educational initiatives reach hundreds of thousands of K-12 students annually through onsite field trips and extensive outreach. Architecture and facilities

The building is a notable example of modern museum architecture, originally designed by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. The 2019 renovation, led by WRNS Studio, added a striking four-story glass atrium and expanded the exhibit space to over 130,000 square feet. Distinctive features include Legorreta's signature use of bold, monolithic forms and vibrant colors, such as the iconic yellow tower. The facility houses state-of-the-art laboratories, digital fabrication tools, and the previously mentioned IMAX theater, making it a versatile venue for both public engagement and private events for organizations like the Association of Science and Technology Centers.

Governance and funding

It operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by a board of trustees comprising leaders from Silicon Valley corporations, academia, and the community. Major funding derives from a mix of ticket sales, memberships, corporate sponsorships, and grants from foundations such as the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The City of San Jose provides support through a long-term lease agreement for its prime location adjacent to the San Jose Convention Center and Parque de los Pobladores.
