Tate Gallery. The institution is a family of four major art museums: Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St Ives. Its collection spans from the Tudor period to the present day, holding the national collection of British art from 1500 and international modern and contemporary art. Founded with a bequest from the industrialist Sir Henry Tate, it has grown from a single gallery at Millbank to become a globally significant arts organization, known for its innovative exhibitions and public programming.

History

The institution was established in 1897, following the philanthropy of sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate, who offered his collection of British art and funding for a dedicated building to the National Gallery. The original gallery, designed by Sidney R. J. Smith, opened on the site of the former Millbank Prison in London. Its early collection was built upon the founding gift and subsequent acquisitions, including the Turner Bequest of works by J. M. W. Turner, which arrived in the early 20th century. Major expansion occurred in the late 20th century, leading to the creation of Tate Liverpool in 1988 and the transformative opening of Tate Modern in the converted Bankside Power Station in 2000, a project led by architects Herzog & de Meuron. This period also saw the establishment of Tate St Ives in 1993, cementing its national presence.

Locations

The four main galleries are situated across England. Tate Britain in London remains the home of historical British art, located at the original Millbank site. Across the River Thames, Tate Modern occupies the vast former Bankside Power Station in Southwark, and is one of the world's largest museums of modern and contemporary art. In the north of England, Tate Liverpool is housed in the Albert Dock complex, a landmark of the city's Merseyside waterfront. Tate St Ives is located in Cornwall, a region with a deep historical connection to modern artists like Alfred Wallis and the St Ives School. Each site has a distinct architectural character and curatorial focus, from the classical portico of Tate Britain to the industrial grandeur of Tate Modern.

Collections

The collection is divided by historical period and geography across the sites. Tate Britain holds the world's greatest collection of works by J. M. W. Turner, alongside major pieces by William Hogarth, John Constable, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and Francis Bacon. Tate Modern's international collection features seminal works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, and Louise Bourgeois. The collection actively engages with global contemporary practice, acquiring works by living artists like Steve McQueen, Cecily Brown, and Ai Weiwei. Key movements represented include Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Minimalism, providing a comprehensive narrative of art since 1900.

Governance and funding

The institution operates as an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. It is governed by a board of trustees, appointed by the Prime Minister, and led by a director. Core funding comes from the government via Arts Council England, but a significant portion of its income is generated through self-generated activities, including commercial ventures, membership schemes like Tate Members, and major philanthropic support from individuals, trusts, and foundations such as the Clore Duffield Foundation and Art Fund. Major capital projects, like the Tate Modern extension, have been supported by large-scale fundraising campaigns.

Notable exhibitions and programs

The galleries are renowned for ambitious temporary exhibitions that attract international attention. Landmark shows have included retrospectives for Salvador Dalí, David Hockney, and Yayoi Kusama, whose Infinity Mirror Rooms have become a global phenomenon. The Tate Modern Turbine Hall has hosted the annual Hyundai Commission, featuring large-scale installations by artists like Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson, and Kara Walker. The Turner Prize, a controversial and influential award for contemporary art, is organized and presented annually, with past winners including Damien Hirst, Steve McQueen, and Lubaina Himid.
