History

The area's earliest inhabitants were the indigenous Tocobaga and Seminole peoples. Spanish explorer Pánfilo de Narváez landed near Tampa in 1528, followed by Hernando de Soto in 1539, who began his famous expedition from the area. The United States established Fort Brooke in 1824, which became the genesis of the modern city. The American Civil War saw a Union naval blockade and the Battle of Fort Brooke. Rapid growth began in the 1880s with the arrival of Henry B.
