Talloires Network

Talloires Network. The Talloires Network is a global coalition of university and college leaders committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education. Founded in 2005 at an international conference in Talloires, France, the network promotes community engagement and applied research to address pressing societal challenges. History and founding

The network was conceived at a conference convened in September 2005 by Tufts University president Lawrence Bacow at the Talloires conference center of Tufts University. This gathering brought together presidents and vice-chancellors from 29 institutions in 23 countries, including leaders from University of Cape Town, University of Delhi, and Chulalongkorn University. The seminal document produced, the Talloires Declaration, outlined ten action items for institutions to integrate civic engagement into their teaching and research missions. This founding event was supported by partnerships with organizations like Campus Compact and drew inspiration from earlier movements such as the Magna Charta Universitatum.

The network administers the MacJannet Prize for student community service, funded by the MacJannet Foundation, and supports regional hubs like the Talloires Network Engaged Research Consortium in Latin America. The network is hosted and coordinated by the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
