The campus's origins are tied to the creation of Bournemouth University, which gained university status in 1992 through the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. Development began in earnest in the early 1990s, with the first purpose-built facilities opening to support the institution's transition from the Bournemouth Polytechnic.
