Svetlana Zakharova is a Russian prima ballerina acclaimed as one of the greatest dancers of her generation. Early life and training

Born in Lutsk, then part of the Ukrainian SSR, she began studying folk dance at a local studio. Recognizing her exceptional potential, her mother enrolled her at the Kyiv Choreographic School, where she trained under the pedagogue Valeria Sulegina. Her prodigious talent was evident early, and in 1995, she won the prestigious Vaganova-Prix competition in Saint Petersburg. This victory led to an invitation to complete her training at the Vaganova Academy in that city, studying under the renowned teacher Yelena Yevteyeva, a former star of the Kirov Ballet.

Upon graduation in 1996, Zakharova was immediately invited to join the Mariinsky Ballet, where she rapidly rose through the ranks. She is particularly celebrated for her interpretations of Odette-Odile in Swan Lake, the title role in Giselle, and Nikia in La Bayadère. Her style is characterized by seemingly effortless technical prowess, including phenomenal extension, flawless pointe work, and a serene, otherworldly stage presence. She has collaborated with contemporary choreographers like John Neumeier on his The Lady of the Camellias and Alexei Ratmansky on reconstructions of Bolshoi classics. Zakharova has received the highest honors in Russian arts. She was named a People's Artist of Russia in 2008 and was awarded the Hero of Labour of the Russian Federation in 2021. She is a multiple laureate of the Golden Mask Award and the Benois de la Danse prize. The French government honored her with the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters. Her contributions were further recognized with the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the Order of Friendship. Internationally, she has been a guest artist with nearly every major company, including the American Ballet Theatre and the Paris Opera Ballet.

Personal life

Zakharova is married to the renowned violinist Vadim Repin; the couple wed in 2011 and have two children. She maintains residences in Moscow and Monte Carlo. Beyond performing, she has served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and has been a deputy in the State Duma as a member of the United Russia party, focusing on cultural policy. She has also starred in several ballet films, including a celebrated cinematic version of The Pharaoh's Daughter.
