The company's origins trace back to 1942 when Ernst Stadler established a metal fabrication workshop in Bussnang. For decades, it operated as a supplier to larger engineering firms, including Schindler Waggon. A pivotal transformation began in 1989 when entrepreneur Peter Spuhler acquired the struggling business, refocusing it on the railway industry. Under his leadership, Stadler secured its first major contract in 1994 to build GTW units for the Appenzell Railways, establishing its reputation for flexible, modular designs. Significant expansion followed through strategic acquisitions, such as the rail vehicle division of SLM in 2005 and the signalling company Prose AG in 2018, solidifying its integrated systems capability. The company completed a successful initial public offering on the SIX Swiss Exchange in 2019.
