Geography

Sonneberg is situated in the southern foothills of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, with the Rennsteig hiking trail passing to the north. The town lies in the valley of the Röthen river, a tributary of the Itz. Its municipal area borders the Bavarian district of Coburg, with the neighboring town of Neustadt bei Coburg directly to the south. The landscape is characterized by forested hills, part of the larger Franconian Forest and Thuringian Forest nature parks. Several smaller villages, such as Oberlind and Unterlind, are incorporated within its boundaries.

History

First mentioned in a 1207 deed, the settlement developed under the rule of the House of Henneberg. It received town privileges from Count Heinrich VIII in 1349. The region's toy-making tradition began in the Middle Ages, with wood-turning and the production of simple wooden toys. This craft expanded dramatically in the 19th century, with Sonneberg becoming the center of the German toy industry, exporting worldwide. The German Toy Museum, founded in 1901, documents this era. Following World War II, it became part of the German Democratic Republic; its industry was organized into state-owned combines like VEB Sonni. The town was part of the Bezirk Suhl administrative district until German reunification in 1990.

Economy

For centuries, the local economy was dominated by the toy and Christmas ornament industry, with major companies like C. M. Dresel and Fleischmann based here. While this sector has diminished, specialized manufacturers and the Deutsche Spielzeugstraße ("German Toy Road") tourism route preserve the legacy. Modern industries include precision engineering, plastics processing, and medical technology. The town is a retail and service center for the surrounding region. It hosts the Bayerntherme thermal baths, a significant leisure and wellness facility. Several industrial parks, such as those in the Bleßberg area, accommodate new businesses.

Culture and sights

The German Toy Museum houses an extensive collection of historical toys from Thuringia and beyond. The town's skyline is marked by the St. Peter's Church and the Sonneberg Observatory, an important public astronomical institution founded in 1925. The annual Sonneberg Summer Festival and the traditional Kät Festival are major local events. Architectural highlights include the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) and the restored Altstadt with its Fachwerk buildings. The Sonneberg Theatre offers a varied program, and the Kunstsammlung Sonneberg features regional art.
