Society of Architectural Historians. The Society of Architectural Historians is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to the study, interpretation, and conservation of the built environment. Founded in 1940, it supports scholarly research and public education through its publications, annual conference, and various programs. Its membership includes academics, preservationists, architects, and students from around the world, with its headquarters located in the Charnley-Persky House in Chicago.

History

The organization was established in 1940 by a group of scholars including Turpin C. Bannister and Henry-Russell Hitchcock, emerging from a growing academic interest in architectural history distinct from art history. Early meetings were often held in conjunction with the College Art Association, and its initial focus was on the architecture of the United States. A significant early project was the publication of the "Great Georgian Houses of America" series. In 1957, the society began holding its own independent annual conferences, with early meetings in cities like Boston and Philadelphia. The acquisition of its permanent headquarters, the Charnley-Persky House designed by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, in 1986 marked a major commitment to preservation and a physical home for its operations.

Publications

The society's flagship journal is the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH), a quarterly peer-reviewed publication featuring scholarly articles on global architectural history from all periods. It also publishes SAH Archipedia, an online encyclopedia of the built environment in the United States, created in partnership with the University of Virginia Press. Another key publication is the Buildings of the United States (BUS) series, a multi-volume scholarly guide modeled on the Pevsner Architectural Guides. The society also produces a newsletter, SAH News, and distributes the SAH Blog, which features timely essays and conference reports.

Activities and programs

The premier event is the annual SAH Annual International Conference, which attracts hundreds of scholars and features paper sessions, tours, and keynote addresses by figures like Barry Bergdoll. The SAH Study Tour program organizes intensive travel seminars to significant architectural sites worldwide, such as Japan or Mexico. The SAH/SCC Architectural Photography Competition encourages the documentation of historic structures. Its SAH Data Project works to compile and standardize information on architectural archives. Public outreach is conducted through the SAH Archipedia and lectures held at the Charnley-Persky House.

Governance and membership

The organization is governed by an elected Board of Directors and led by an Executive Director, with current operations managed by Bannon McHenry. An international board of trustees provides additional oversight and fundraising support. Membership is open to individuals and includes several tiers, such as Student, Associate, and Life Member. Institutional members include universities like Columbia University and museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The society maintains affiliate relationships with other organizations, including DOCOMOMO and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Awards and recognition

The highest honor bestowed is the SAH Award for Lifetime Achievement, awarded to distinguished scholars like Spiro Kostof and Vincent Scully. The Alice Davis Hitchcock Book Award recognizes the most distinguished work of scholarship in the field published each year. The Antoinette Forrester Downing Award honors excellence in historic preservation publishing. The Founders' Award is given for the best article published in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. The society also administers the Seymour H. Persky Prize and the Scott Opler Endowment for emerging scholars.
