The institution traces its origins to 1951 with the establishment of the Hongshan Coal Mine School in Zibo, a key development during the early industrialization of the People's Republic of China. In 1999, a significant merger with the Shandong Coal Management Institute strengthened its profile, leading to its renaming as Shandong University of Science and Technology.
