Shandong University

Shandong University is a major public university in China and a key comprehensive institution directly under the Ministry of Education. Founded in 1901 as the Shandong Imperial College, it is recognized as one of the origins of modern Chinese higher education. The university is a member of the prestigious Project 985, Project 211, and the national Double First Class University Plan, operating across multiple campuses in the cities of Jinan, Qingdao, and Weihai.

History

The institution traces its origins to the Shandong Imperial College established in 1901 in Jinan during the late Qing dynasty, evolving from the earlier Luxun Academy. Following the Xinhai Revolution, it was reorganized as Shandong Provincial University and later, in the 1920s, merged with provincial agricultural, industrial, and medical colleges to form National Shandong University, with renowned scholar Yang Zhensheng serving as its first president. The university was relocated to Qingdao in 1958, absorbing parts of Cheeloo University, and underwent significant restructuring during the national Higher Education Reform of 2000, merging with Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology to form the present comprehensive university, subsequently re-establishing a campus in Jinan and expanding to Weihai.

The central campus is located in Jinan, which includes the historic Hongjialou site and newer facilities in the Xinglong Hill area, serving as the main administrative hub.
