Scott H. Swift

Scott H. Swift is a retired United States Navy admiral who served as the final commander of the United States Pacific Fleet before its merger into the United States Indo-Pacific Command. A naval aviator, his career spanned nearly four decades and included key operational commands during the Global War on Terrorism and significant leadership roles in the Asia-Pacific region. Following his retirement, Swift has been involved in academic and strategic analysis concerning maritime security and great power competition.

Early life and education

Swift was born in Pennsylvania and later moved to Florida, where he attended Florida State University. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He later earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. His professional military education also includes attendance at the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia.

Military career

Commissioned as an ensign, Swift was designated a naval aviator in 1981. His early operational assignments included flying the F-14 Tomcat with Strike Fighter Squadron 24 aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). He later commanded Strike Fighter Squadron 195, known as the "Dambusters," flying the F/A-18 Hornet from the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). His command at sea progressed to include the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Shiloh (CG-67) and the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74). As a flag officer, Swift commanded Carrier Strike Group Nine and served as commander of United States Naval Forces Japan. He led the United States Seventh Fleet from Yokosuka, Japan, overseeing operations across the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. His final assignment was as commander of the United States Pacific Fleet, headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam in Hawaii, where he was responsible for the world's largest fleet command.

Personal life

Swift is married and has two children. Following his retirement from the United States Navy in 2018, he joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a senior fellow at the MIT Center for International Studies. He has also served as a distinguished senior fellow at the University of Texas at Austin's Clements Center for National Security. He is a frequent commentator on Indo-Pacific security issues and has published analyses with institutions like the United States Naval Institute and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

Awards and decorations

Swift's personal military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, and four awards of the Legion of Merit. He has also received the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He is authorized to wear the Naval Aviator Badge, the Surface Warfare Officer Badge, and various unit and campaign awards, including those for service in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
