Scot Center

Scot Center. The Scot Center is a major athletic, wellness, and events complex located on the campus of The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. Opened in 2012, the facility serves as the primary venue for the college's NCAA Division III athletics programs, particularly the Fighting Scots, and as a hub for campus and community events. Designed by the architectural firm Moody Nolan, it is noted for its sustainable design and significant role in student life.

History

Planning for a new athletic facility began in the early 2000s as part of a broader campus master plan to modernize The College of Wooster's infrastructure. The project received a major boost from a lead gift by alumni and trustees Stanley C. Gault and Florence Gault, for whom the basketball arena is named. Construction commenced in 2010, and the center opened in January 2012, replacing the aging Timken Gymnasium. Its development coincided with the college's "Independent Minds" capital campaign, which also funded renovations to Kauke Hall and the Gault Schoolhouse. The opening was celebrated with a dedication ceremony featuring remarks from then-college president Grant Cornwell and a community open house.

Architecture and facilities

Designed by the firm Moody Nolan, the nation's largest African American-owned architecture practice, the Scot Center is a LEED Gold-certified building emphasizing energy efficiency and natural light. The complex's most prominent feature is the Gault Recreation Center, which includes a three-court arena for basketball and volleyball, seating over 3,400 spectators. Other key facilities include the Freelander Track, a 200-meter indoor track; the Papp Stadium fieldhouse for football, soccer, and lacrosse; and the Martha Heestand Gymnasium. The center also houses a fitness center, multipurpose rooms, the Wilson Bookstore, and the Lowry Center for student dining and activities, physically connecting it to the heart of campus.

Academic and student life

Beyond athletics, the Scot Center is integrated into the daily life of the The College of Wooster community. It hosts annual events like Opening Convocation and Commencement, and its spaces are used for classes in kinesiology, dance, and health education. The facility is home to the department of Physical Education and supports the college's distinctive Independent Study program by providing research and activity spaces. Student organizations, including the Wooster Activities Crew (WAC), plan events in the building, and it serves as a primary venue for large-scale campus gatherings like the Scot Spirit Day and Homecoming festivities, fostering school spirit and community engagement.

The Scot Center has hosted significant athletic competitions, including NCAA Division III championship events in track and field and basketball, as well as North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournaments. It is the regular venue for the College of Wooster Fighting Scots basketball teams' most critical games, such as rivalry matchups against Wittenberg University and DePauw University. Notable non-athletic events have included concerts, lectures by figures like Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative, and community-wide events such as the Wayne County Fair's annual preview. The Wooster Symphony Orchestra and Wooster Chorus have also performed in the arena.
