Sam Reed

Sam Reed is an American politician and election administrator who served as the Washington Secretary ofState from 2001 to 2013. A member of the Republican Party, he was widely recognized for his nonpartisan stewardship of the state's elections and his advocacy for civic engagement. His tenure oversaw the implementation of Washington's vote-by-mail system and the landmark 2004 Washington gubernatorial election recount.

Early life and education

Sam Reed was born in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in the South Puget Sound region. He attended Washington State University, where he earned a degree in political science and was actively involved in student government. His early interest in public service was influenced by figures like Daniel J. Evans and he later credited his education at Washington State University with providing a foundation for his career in state government.

Political career

Before becoming Washington Secretary of State, Reed held several significant positions in Washington state government. He served as the Thurston County Auditor and later as the State Auditor's chief deputy. During this period, he worked closely with officials like Brian Sonntag and gained a reputation for integrity in financial oversight. Secretary of State tenure

Elected in 2000, Sam Reed assumed office as the Washington Secretary of State in January 2001, succeeding Ralph Munro. His tenure was defined by the administration of the extremely close 2004 Washington gubernatorial election between Christine Gregoire and Dino Rossi, which involved multiple recounts and legal challenges before the Washington Supreme Court. Reed championed and successfully implemented a statewide vote-by-mail system, making Washington a leader in vote-at-home elections. He also modernized the state's corporation and charity filing systems, served on the U.S. Election Assistance Commission's board of advisors, and was a proponent of the Washington State Archives and Washington State Library.

Electoral history

Sam Reed was first elected Washington Secretary of State in the 2000 election, defeating Democratic nominee Ruthann Kurose. He was re-elected in 2004, overcoming a challenge from Jason Osgood, and again in 2008, defeating Democratic nominee Jason Osgood. His electoral successes were notable in a state that often favored Democratic candidates in other statewide offices during that era. He did not seek re-election in 2012 and was succeeded by fellow Republican Kim Wyman.

Sam Reed is married to Margie Reed and they have two children. He has been active in numerous civic organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America and his local Rotary International club.
