Following the Fall of Saigon in 1975 and the Reunification of Vietnam, the higher education system was reorganized. In 1977, the faculty was separated to become the University of Ho Chi Minh City. A major restructuring in 1996 led to the establishment of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, a multi-university system, and the institution was renamed the University of Natural Sciences.
