Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Founded in 1946 by the conductor Thomas Beecham, it is one of London's five major symphony orchestras. Based primarily at the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall, the orchestra is renowned for its artistic versatility, performing a wide repertoire from the core classical canon to film scores and cross-genre collaborations. History

The orchestra was established in the aftermath of World War II by Sir Thomas Beecham, who sought to create an ensemble of the highest calibre. Its inaugural concert was held at the Davis Theatre in Croydon. Following Beecham's death in 1961, the ensemble faced financial difficulties but was revitalized under the leadership of its manager, Eric Bravington. In 1966, the Arts Council of Great Britain provided crucial funding, securing its future. A significant residency began at the newly opened Barbican Centre in 1982, lasting over two decades. The orchestra later established its administrative base and a primary performance venue at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea.

Principal conductors and artistic leadership

The founding music director, Thomas Beecham, shaped the orchestra's early identity and sound. Subsequent principal conductors have included Rudolf Kempe, who was instrumental in maintaining artistic standards, and Antal Doráti, who expanded the recorded repertoire. Walter Weller, André Previn, and Vladimir Ashkenazy each brought distinct interpretative styles during their tenures. Yuri Temirkanov served from 1992 to 1998, followed by Daniele Gatti until 2016. Charles Dutoit held the title of artistic director and principal conductor from 2009 to 2018. The current music director is Vasily Petrenko, who assumed the role in 2021. The position of conductor laureate is held by Pinchas Zukerman.

Repertoire and recordings

The orchestra's repertoire spans from the symphonies of Haydn and Mozart through the Romantic works of Tchaikovsky and Mahler to 20th-century composers like Stravinsky and Shostakovich. It has a strong association with the music of Frederick Delius, championed by Beecham. The RPO has a prolific recording history, with early celebrated releases on the EMI label, including complete cycles of Beethoven and Sibelius symphonies. It has recorded for Decca Records, RCA Records, and more recently for labels like Warner Classics. The orchestra also frequently records film scores, contributing to soundtracks for major Hollywood studios and collaborating with composers such as John Williams.

Notable performances and tours

The RPO gave the world premiere of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Sinfonia Antartica in 1953. It has been a regular participant in the BBC Proms since 1947 and provides the orchestra for the annual Night of the Proms tour in Europe. Landmark tours have included extensive travels across North America, Asia, and throughout Europe. The orchestra performed at the London 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony. It also regularly accompanies major ballet companies, including The Royal Ballet, and has performed concert operas at the Royal Albert Hall.

Organisation and funding

The orchestra operates as a self-governing charitable trust, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Ltd. It receives a portion of its revenue from the Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation. Significant additional funding comes from commercial activities, including recordings, touring, and private events. Corporate sponsorship and philanthropic support from trusts, foundations, and individual patrons are vital to its financial model. The RPO also maintains a strong education and community outreach program, the RPO Resound, which works across the United Kingdom.

Awards and recognition

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has received numerous accolades for its recordings, including several Gramophone Awards. It won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Album in 1986 for its recording of Stravinsky's The Firebird under the baton of Antal Doráti. The orchestra and its musicians have been nominated for and won various Classical BRIT Awards. In 2020, it was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Ensemble Award. Its recordings continue to receive critical acclaim in publications like BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone.
