Rotman School of Management

Rotman School of Management is the graduate business school of the University of Toronto, located in the Discovery District of Toronto. It offers a full suite of degree programs including the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Finance, and the PhD in Management, alongside a robust portfolio of executive education. The school is named for benefactor Joseph L. Rotman and is widely recognized for its influential research and its distinctive focus on integrative thinking.

History

The school traces its origins to 1950, when the University of Toronto established a Bachelor of Commerce program within its Faculty of Arts and Science. A formal School of Business was created in 1972, which was later renamed in honour of major donor and philanthropist Joseph L. Rotman in 1997. Under the transformative deanship of Roger Martin, who served from 1998 to 2013, the school embarked on a significant expansion of its faculty, curriculum, and physical footprint. This era saw the introduction of its integrative thinking framework and the construction of its current main building, designed by renowned architects Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg. Subsequent deans Tiff Macklem and Susan Christoffersen have continued to advance its global reputation and research impact.

Academics

The school's flagship program is its full-time Master of Business Administration, which is consistently ranked among the top in Canada and globally by publications such as Bloomberg Businessweek and the Financial Times. It also offers specialized masters degrees including the Master of Finance, the Master of Management Analytics, and the Global Executive MBA in partnership with the SDA Bocconi School of Management and the UCLA Anderson School of Management. The PhD in Management program prepares scholars for academic careers at leading institutions worldwide. A cornerstone of the pedagogy is the teaching of integrative thinking, a problem-solving methodology developed by Roger Martin and extensively documented in his collaboration with Procter & Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley.

It houses numerous research centres that foster collaboration with industry and government, such as the Michael Lee-Chin & Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship, the Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics, and the David and Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation. The Behavioural Economics in Action at Rotman centre, led by pioneers like Dilip Soman, applies insights from psychology to public policy and business practice. Faculty research is frequently published in top-tier journals including the American Economic Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Finance. The school also maintains strong ties with the Bank of Canada, the Ontario Securities Commission, and major financial institutions in the Toronto Stock Exchange district.

Campus and facilities

The main building is located at 105 St. George Street in the heart of the University of Toronto's St. George campus, adjacent to the Royal Ontario Museum and the MaRS Discovery District. Designed by the architectural firm Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg, the structure is notable for its expansive glass-and-steel rotunda, known as the Fleck Atrium. The facility includes the Financial Research and Trading Lab, equipped with Bloomberg Terminals and data feeds from Refinitiv, and the Martin Prosperity Institute. Executive education programs are often held at the school's dedicated downtown facility near Brookfield Place and the Financial District, Toronto.

Its faculty includes prominent scholars such as finance professor and former Governor of the Bank of Canada Tiff Macklem, innovation authority Richard Florida, and Nobel laureate in economics Daniel Kahneman, who serves as a University Professor. Distinguished alumni span global business and public service, including former Prime Minister of Canada Paul Martin, former CEO of TD Bank Group Ed Clark, and former CEO of Loblaw Companies Galen Weston Jr.. Other notable graduates are Dominic Barton, former Global Managing Director of McKinsey & Company, and Michele Romanow, co-founder of Clearbanc and star of the CBC Television series *Dragons' Den*.
