The diocese was originally erected by Pope Pius VII in 1808, covering the entire state of New York and New Jersey. Its first bishop was Richard Luke Concanen, who was consecrated in Rome but died before reaching New York City. Under early leaders like John Dubois and the renowned John Hughes, the church grew amidst anti-Catholic sentiment, culminating in the construction of the original St. Patrick's Cathedral. The archdiocese is led by the Metropolitan Archbishop of New York, a position historically considered one of the most prominent in the American Catholic Church. The current archbishop is Timothy Michael Dolan, created a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
