Rich Miner

Rich Miner is an American venture capitalist and software engineer best known as a co-founder of the Android mobile operating system and a key figure in its early development. Early life and education

Miner was raised in Massachusetts and developed an early interest in computing. He pursued his higher education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he earned a degree in computer science. Career

Miner began his career in the early 1990s at BBN Corporation, a renowned research and development company known for its work on the ARPANET. In 1995, he co-founded Wildfire Communications, an innovative company that created a virtual assistant for managing telephone communications, which is considered a precursor to modern services like Siri and Google Assistant. After Wildfire Communications was acquired by Orange S.A. in 2000, Miner served as a vice president at the telecommunications giant. His expertise in mobile software and services led him to co-found Android Inc. in 2003 alongside Andy Rubin, Nick Sears, and Chris White.

Role in Android development

As a co-founder of Android Inc., Miner was instrumental in the initial vision to create a more open and advanced operating system for digital cameras, a focus that quickly pivoted to mobile phones. Following the acquisition of Android Inc. by Google in 2005, he joined the search engine company as a key member of the Android development team.
