Description

The refuge is a sturdy, functional building situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the confluence of the Glacier Blanc and the Glacier du Sélé. It commands dramatic views of surrounding giants including the Pic Sans Nom, the Râteau, and the north face of the Mont Pelvoux. With a capacity for approximately 80 people, it offers dormitory accommodation, a communal dining area, and guardian service during the summer season. Its location within the core zone of the Écrins National Park emphasizes its role in a protected environment governed by the Parcs nationaux de France. The hut's design prioritizes resilience against the harsh alpine climate characteristic of the Hautes-Alpes region.

Access and routes

The standard approach begins from the hamlet of Ailefroide in the Vallée de la Vallouise. A well-marked path ascends through the Pré de Madame Carle, a popular starting point for hikes, following the left bank of the Torrent du Glacier Blanc. The walk typically takes 3 to 4 hours, involving a steady climb with some exposed sections secured by cables. The refuge is a key stage on the GR54, also known as the Tour de l'Oisans, and connects to other important huts like the Refuge du Sélé and the Refuge de l'Alpe de Villar-d'Arêne. In winter, the approach becomes a serious ski touring or mountaineering itinerary.

Mountaineering and activities

The refuge is primarily a launch point for classic alpine routes on the highest peaks of the Massif des Écrins. The normal route on the Barre des Écrins (4,102 m), the highest summit in the range, starts here, traversing the Glacier Blanc and the Col des Écrins. Other major objectives accessible include the Dôme de Neige des Écrins, the Pic Sans Nom, and the Râteau. The vast Glacier Blanc itself offers extensive terrain for glacier travel training and ski touring in spring.
