RAAF Base Williamtown

The establishment of the airfield was approved in 1940, with construction commencing the following year to support the Empire Air Training Scheme during World War II. Following the war, its role expanded with the onset of the Cold War, leading to upgrades for jet operations. Key support units include the Combat Support Group, elements of the Surveillance and Response Group, and detachments from the Royal Australian Navy and Army Aviation. Day-to-day operations encompass continuous quick reaction alert duties for the air defence of eastern Australia, conducted in coordination with the Australian Air Defence Identification Zone. The base hosts major multinational exercises such as Exercise Pitch Black and Exercise Talisman Sabre, involving participants from allies like the United States Air Force, Royal Air Force, and Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Squadrons regularly deploy for international engagements and operations, including rotations to the Middle East and participation in Five Power Defence Arrangements activities. The Williamtown Air Weapons Range provides a vital venue for live weapons training and tactical development.
