Qafco. The Qatar Fertiliser Company, known globally as Qafco, is a cornerstone of the Qatari industrial landscape and one of the world's largest single-site producers of ammonia and urea. Established in the late 1960s, its growth has been intrinsically linked to the development of the nation's vast natural gas resources, transforming Qatar into a leading exporter of fertilisers. History

The company was founded in 1969 through a partnership between the Government of Qatar and foreign investors, including the Norsk Hydro Company, marking a pivotal early step in Qatar's industrialisation beyond crude oil. The first production train, Qafco-1, commenced operations in 1973. A major expansion occurred in 1979 with the Qafco-2 project, significantly boosting capacity. Subsequent decades saw the commissioning of the massive Qafco-3 and Qafco-4 complexes in 1997 and 2004, respectively, funded in part by an IPO on the Qatar Exchange. The most recent and largest expansion, the Qafco-5 and Qafco-6 mega-trains, were completed in 2011 and 2012, solidifying its position as a global giant. This historical growth trajectory has paralleled the development of the North Field, the world's largest non-associated natural gas field.

Operations and production

Qafco's integrated manufacturing complex is located within the Mesaieed Industrial City, leveraging proximity to feedstock from the QatarEnergy-operated LNG and GTL facilities. The core process involves reforming natural gas to produce hydrogen, which is then combined with nitrogen from an air separation unit to synthesize ammonia. A substantial portion of this ammonia is further processed into urea, a solid nitrogen fertilizer. The company's total annual production capacity exceeds 5.8 million metric tonnes of urea and 3.8 million metric tonnes of ammonia. Its products are exported globally via a dedicated shipping terminal at the Port of Mesaieed, serving key agricultural markets in Asia, South America, and Australia.

Corporate structure and ownership

Qafco operates as a Qatari joint stock company and is a flagship subsidiary within the QatarEnergy (formerly Qatar Petroleum) industrial conglomerate. The ownership structure is a long-standing strategic partnership, with QatarEnergy holding a 75% majority stake. The remaining 25% is owned by the Norwegian agrochemicals leader Yara International, a successor to the original Norsk Hydro stake. The board of directors includes senior executives from both QatarEnergy and Yara International, and the company is chaired by Ahmed Saif Al Sulaiti. This structure ensures alignment with Qatar's national energy strategy while providing access to global agricultural market expertise.

Economic and environmental impact

As a critical pillar of Qatar's non-LNG industrial exports, Qafco contributes significantly to the national GDP and trade surplus. It is a major employer and a catalyst for the development of downstream industries and the Q-Chem petrochemical cluster. Environmentally, while its production is energy-intensive, the company has implemented numerous initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint, including carbon dioxide recovery for use in urea synthesis. Its operations are subject to the environmental regulations of the Ministry of Environment and align with Qatar National Vision 2030 goals for sustainable development.
