History

Pylon was formed in 1979 by University of Georgia art students Michael Lachowski and Randall Bewley, who were soon joined by drummer Curtis Crowe and vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay. Inspired by the do-it-yourself ethos of punk rock and the success of fellow Athens band The B-52's, they played their first show at a friend's house party. Their early performances at local venues like the 40 Watt Club quickly established them as a standout act within the burgeoning Athens scene. The band's debut single, "Cool" / "Dub", was released in 1980 on the Atlanta-based independent label DB Records, garnering immediate college radio play and positive reviews in publications like Village Voice.

Their debut album, Gyrate, was released in 1980 on DB Records, capturing their minimalist, danceable sound. Pylon toured extensively, opening for bands such as U2 and The Police, and developed a strong reputation on the college rock circuit. Despite growing acclaim, the band members, prioritizing their artistic careers, decided to disband in 1983 after releasing their second album, Chomp, on Armageddon Records. A compilation, Hits, was released in 1988 by DB Records, coinciding with a brief reunion that lasted until 1991. Following the death of guitarist Randall Bewley in 2009, the remaining members became less active, though they have performed sporadically, including a notable 2014 show at the Georgia Theatre. Their catalog was reissued by DFA Records in 2016, introducing their music to a new generation.

Pylon's music is characterized by a driving, rhythmic foundation, intertwining Michael Lachowski's melodic bass lines, Randall Bewley's choppy, minimalist guitar work, and the precise, propulsive drumming of Curtis Crowe.
