Prith Banerjee

Prith Banerjee is an Indian-American computer scientist, technology executive, and venture capitalist recognized for his pioneering work in electronic design automation (EDA) and high-performance computing. He has held significant leadership roles in academia at institutions like the University of Illinois Chicago and in industry at corporations including Hewlett Packard and Ansys. Banerjee is a recipient of the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, and is a fellow of both the IEEE and the ACM.

Early life and education

Prith Banerjee was born in Kolkata and completed his undergraduate studies in electronics and electrical communication engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, graduating at the top of his class. He then moved to the United States for graduate work, earning both a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His doctoral research, conducted under advisors including C. L. Liu, focused on parallel algorithms for logic synthesis, laying the groundwork for his future contributions to computer-aided design.

Career

Banerjee began his academic career as a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He later served as the chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University before becoming the dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago. In the corporate sector, he was the director of Hewlett Packard Labs and the chief technology officer of Hewlett Packard. Following his tenure at HP, Banerjee served as the executive vice president and chief technology officer at Ansys, a global leader in engineering simulation software. He has also been a managing director at the venture capital firm Accel Partners and served on the boards of several technology companies, including Aricent and InMobi.

Research and contributions

Banerjee's research has significantly advanced the fields of parallel computing and electronic design automation. He founded the Parallel and Distributed Systems Laboratory at the University of Illinois and made seminal contributions to automatic parallelization of sequential programs and fault-tolerant computing. His work on parallel algorithms for VLSI placement and routing and logic synthesis has been widely implemented in commercial EDA tools from companies like Synopsys and Cadence Design Systems. He has authored over 300 papers, holds several U.S. patents, and has advised numerous doctoral students who have gone on to prominent positions at organizations such as Intel, Google, and IBM.

Prith Banerjee has received numerous accolades for his technical and leadership contributions. He was elected a fellow of the IEEE in 1999 and a fellow of the ACM in 2006. Prith Banerjee is married and has two children.
