Plot

Production

Development began after writers Jim and John Thomas pitched the concept of a "Rocky meets *Alien*" story. 20th Century Fox purchased the script, with Lawrence Gordon producing and John McTiernan hired to direct. Filming took place in the jungles of Palenque, Mexico, during the summer of 1986, with the production facing extreme heat, humidity, and logistical challenges. The creature design, by Stan Winston, underwent significant revisions after an initial suit, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, was deemed unsatisfactory. Kevin Peter Hall was recast in the role, with the final biomechanical design created by Winston's studio. The musical score was composed by Alan Silvestri.

Release

The film premiered in Detroit on June 12, 1987, before its wide release across North America by 20th Century Fox.
