History

The area was originally inhabited by the Wappinger people, with the name Poughkeepsie deriving from a Munsee word. The first European settlement was established in 1687 by Robert Sanders and other Dutch traders. Poughkeepsie played a pivotal role during the American Revolution, serving as the temporary capital of New York and hosting the Poughkeepsie Convention, which ratified the United States Constitution in 1788. The city's growth accelerated with the arrival of the Hudson River Railroad and its designation as the county seat of Dutchess County.
