Pollock Halls

Pollock Halls is a major catered accommodation complex for students of the University of Edinburgh. Located adjacent to Holyrood Park and near Arthur's Seat, the site comprises numerous residential halls of varying architectural styles, constructed from the 1950s onwards. It is one of the largest student residence facilities in the United Kingdom, housing over 2,000 students during the academic year and providing extensive dining, social, and recreational facilities.

History

The site's history is deeply intertwined with the post-war expansion of the University of Edinburgh. Initial construction began in the 1950s on land formerly part of the Easter King's Park, with early halls like John Burnet Hall and Holland House built to accommodate growing student numbers. The complex is named after the Pollock family, notably Sir John Pollock, 2nd Baronet, a former Lord Provost of Edinburgh and University Court member. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, further development saw the addition of halls such as Chancellor's Court and Grant House, reflecting evolving architectural trends. The halls have hosted numerous notable figures, including former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and author J.K. Rowling.

Accommodation

Pollock Halls offers primarily single room accommodation across its many distinct halls, which are grouped into several catered and self-catered clusters. The largest and most prominent halls include John Burnet Hall, Holland House, and Chancellor's Court, each with its own character and layout. Rooms are typically arranged along corridors with shared bathroom facilities, though some modern blocks offer en-suite options. Accommodation is predominantly reserved for first-year students and international students, with contracts covering the standard academic term. The University of Edinburgh Accommodation office manages all allocations and tenancy agreements.

Facilities and amenities

The central hub of the complex is the John McIntyre Centre, which houses the main dining hall, a common room, and conference facilities. Each hall has a team of senior student Resident Assistants and a non-resident Warden who organize events and provide support. The Pollock Halls Students' Association represents resident interests and coordinates a wide array of activities, from intramural sport competitions to formal balls. Its proximity to Holyrood Park and the Royal Mile makes it a popular base for exploring Edinburgh, including landmarks like Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish Parliament. The annual Freshers' Week program is heavily centered on the halls.

Governance and administration

Pollock Halls is operated by University of Edinburgh Accommodation, a department within the University of Edinburgh's Professional Services division. Overall strategic responsibility lies with the University Court and the Vice-Principal for Services. Day-to-day management is handled by a full-time Accommodation Manager and their team, who oversee maintenance, catering, and staffing. The Warden system, comprising academic staff from the University of Edinburgh, provides pastoral and disciplinary oversight in conjunction with the University's Student Discipline Office. Financial operations and long-term planning are integrated into the broader University of Edinburgh estate strategy.
