The idea for *Piper* originated with director Alan Barillaro, who was inspired by observing birds on the beaches of the San Francisco Bay Area near Pixar Animation Studios' headquarters in Emeryville, California. Barillaro, a veteran animator on films like *WALL-E* and *Brave*, sought to create a story about overcoming fear through observation. The short was developed as a technical and artistic challenge to push the boundaries of photorealistic rendering, particularly for elements like water, feathers, and wet sand.
