Early life and education

Petroc Trelawny was born in Westminster, London, and spent his formative years in North Cornwall. His early interest in music and performance was nurtured at Truro Cathedral School, where he sang as a chorister. He later attended Millfield school in Street, Somerset, before pursuing higher education. Trelawny read Politics at the University of Bristol, graduating in 1991. During his time at university, he gained initial broadcasting experience by working at the student radio station Bristol University Radio.

Trelawny joined the BBC in the early 1990s, initially working as a researcher and producer for BBC Radio 4 on programs such as Today and The World at One. He moved to BBC Radio 3 in 1998, quickly becoming one of the network's core presenters.
