History

Planning for the arena began in the late 1990s as part of a broader campus development initiative led by university president John L. Ewing Jr.. The project broke ground in 2001 on the site of the former Mount Union Fieldhouse, a structure dating to the mid-20th century. Designed by the architectural firm Moody Nolan, construction was managed by The Ruhlin Company and completed in late 2002, with a formal dedication ceremony held in January 2003. The opening coincided with the centennial celebration of Mount Union Purple Raiders athletics, marking a significant upgrade from the previous McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. The project was funded through a combination of university capital and a major private gift from Timken Company executives.

Facilities and features

The arena's main bowl features permanent seating for 2,200, with temporary bleachers allowing expansion to 3,200 for major events. The playing surface is a Maplewood court branded for Mount Union Purple Raiders basketball, flanked by retractable seating for volleyball configurations. The facility includes four dedicated locker rooms for home and visiting teams, officials' suites, and athletic training areas equipped by Breg and Cramer. A second-level concourse houses concession stands operated by Aramark, university merchandise outlets, and hall-of-fame displays honoring Ohio Athletic Conference legends. The building also contains the George J. Kappus Athletic Hall of Fame, multimedia production studios for WMRU, and offices for the Department of Athletics.

The arena has hosted numerous significant athletic and community events since its inauguration. It is the annual site for the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament semifinals and finals, as well as the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship first and second rounds. Beyond collegiate sports, the venue has staged concerts by artists like Rascal Flatts and O.A.R., high school Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament games, and commencement ceremonies for Alliance City Schools. The arena also regularly hosts large-scale university functions such as First-Year Experience orientation, the Mount Union Scholarship Ball, and performances by the Canton Symphony Orchestra.

Naming and recognition

The facility was formally named in a 2005 ceremony recognizing a transformative gift from Timothy P. Smith in honor of his wife, Pamela Evans Smith. A 1982 graduate, Pamela Evans Smith was a standout three-sport athlete in basketball, volleyball, and softball, earning All-American honors and later induction into the Mount Union Athletic Hall of Fame. The naming followed the university's policy for donor recognition, established during the Lifelong Learning capital campaign. The arena has received awards for design and accessibility from the American Institute of Architects and the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.
