The university's origins trace back to the merger of several professional colleges, including the former Oslo University College, which was formed in 1994. In 2011, it merged with Akershus University College, significantly expanding its scope. The institution was granted full university status by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research in 2018, adopting its current name to reflect its metropolitan mission and broader academic ambitions.
