History

The district's origins are inextricably linked to the federal government's rapid establishment of the Clinton Engineer Works in 1943. To educate the children of thousands of scientists, engineers, and construction workers recruited for the Manhattan Project, the United States Army Corps of Engineers created a school system virtually overnight. Early classes were held in barracks and other temporary structures. Following the war, the Atomic Energy Commission assumed oversight, and the schools became a permanent municipal system after the city's incorporation in 1959. Schools

The district operates nine schools, organized in a traditional grade-level configuration. At the elementary level, it includes Glenwood Elementary School, Linden Elementary School, Woodland Elementary School, and Willow Brook Elementary School. Students then attend Jefferson Middle School or Robertsville Middle School for grades 6-8. All high school students are served by the comprehensive Oak Ridge High School, home of the Oak Ridge Wildcats. The district also manages an early childhood education program, the Preschool.
