Northgate United. Northgate United is a professional association football club based in the historic city of Northgate, England. Founded in the late 19th century, the club has spent much of its history in the lower divisions of English football, developing a passionate local following. Its traditional home is The Northgate Arena, and the team is known for its distinctive claret and blue kits.

History

The club was established in 1898 by a group of local industrialists, including Walter Hargreaves, a prominent figure in the city's textile industry. Initially playing in regional leagues like the Midland Football League, Northgate United turned professional in 1921 and gained election to the Football League Third Division North in 1923. Northgate United has played at its current home, The Northgate Arena, since 1925, when it moved from its original ground at Hargreaves Park. The stadium is noted for its distinctive Art Deco main stand, designed by architect Sir Edwin Cooper, which is a listed building. Major redevelopment in the 1990s, including the construction of the Finch Stand named after the chairman's family, increased capacity to its current 12,500. The pitch has a notable slope, similar to that once famous at Home Park, and the ground has hosted several England Under-21 international matches. Plans for a future expansion of the South Stand are contingent on the club achieving promotion to the English Football League.
