Nicky Banks

Nicky Banks is a British actress and film producer known for her versatile roles in independent cinema and major studio productions. She gained critical acclaim for her performance in the psychological thriller The Silent House, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Banks has since established herself as a prominent figure in the British film industry, also founding her own production company, Verve Pictures.

Early life and education

Nicky Banks was born in the Camden Town borough of London to a schoolteacher mother and an architect father. She developed an interest in performing arts at a young age, attending the Anna Scher Theatre school for children on weekends. For her secondary education, she was a student at the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology in Croydon, where she focused on theatre studies. She subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the University of Bristol, graduating with first-class honours, before undertaking a short course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Career

Banks made her professional stage debut in a 2006 production of The Seagull at the Royal Court Theatre. Her screen breakthrough came in 2009 with a supporting role in the BBC television film The Last Detective. She transitioned to film, earning widespread recognition for her lead role in The Silent House (2012), a performance that won her the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress. This success led to roles in higher-profile projects, including the Warner Bros. fantasy film Chronicles of the Lost Realm (2015) and the Netflix original series Cipher Point (2018-2020).

In 2017, she co-founded the production company Verve Pictures with director Simon Leigh. Their first feature, Echoes of August, which Banks also starred in, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews. She has since produced several projects through the company, including the BAFTA-nominated short film The Grey Between. Banks is also known for her advocacy for gender parity in film, frequently collaborating with organizations like Women in Film & Television UK.

Personal life

Banks married cinematographer Marcus Thorne in a private ceremony in Cornwall in 2018. The couple resides in Hampstead, London. She is a patron of the charity Actors' Benevolent Fund and has been involved in fundraising for the National Literacy Trust. An avid equestrian, Banks has competed in amateur show jumping events at the Hickstead Derby meeting.
