New York State Route 217

New York State Route 217 is a short east–west state highway located entirely within the town of Catskill in Greene County. It serves as a connector between two major north–south routes, NY 32 and NY 23, skirting the northern edge of the Hudson River valley. The route provides access to local residential areas and the historic Bronck House Museum.

Route description

Beginning at an intersection with NY 32 just north of the village of Catskill, the highway heads eastward as Main Street. It passes through a mix of residential and lightly commercial areas, running parallel to and north of NY 23B. The road curves gently through the Hudson Valley terrain, offering views of the nearby Catskill Mountains. It crosses over Kaaterskill Creek before terminating at a junction with NY 23 near the Greene County line with Columbia County.

History

The route was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, which was a massive reorganization of the state highway system. It has remained largely unchanged in its alignment since its designation. The roadway follows a path historically used for local travel between the communities along the Hudson River and the agricultural areas to the east. While short, it has been part of the New York State highway network for nearly a century, with maintenance responsibilities falling under the New York State Department of Transportation's Region 1 office.
