Nehru Memorial Museum & Library

Nehru Memorial Museum & Library is a premier institution of research on modern Indian history, established in the memory of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Housed within the historic Teen Murti Bhavan complex in New Delhi, it functions as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture. History

The institution was established in 1964, following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, with the Government of India converting his official residence, Teen Murti Bhavan, into a memorial. The museum section was inaugurated by President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in November 1966. Under its first director, B. R. Nanda, the library rapidly expanded its archival holdings, acquiring the personal papers of numerous figures from the Indian National Congress and the freedom struggle. It has since evolved from a memorial into one of the world's leading research libraries on contemporary Indian history, witnessing significant expansions under subsequent directors like Ravinder Kumar and scholars such as M. G. K. Menon.

Collections

The library's vast and diverse collections are a primary resource for research on modern and contemporary South Asia. Its manuscript division holds the original papers of Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, C. Rajagopalachari, and Jayaprakash Narayan, among others. The oral history project contains thousands of hours of recorded interviews with key participants in India's political history, including V. V. Giri and Morarji Desai. The photograph archive documents major events from the late 19th century onwards, while the library maintains a comprehensive collection of books, journals, and newspapers, including rare publications from the colonial era. Special collections also encompass the papers of the All India Congress Committee and documents related to the Quit India Movement.

Architecture and campus

The institution is located within the Teen Murti Bhavan estate, a building originally designed by Robert Tor Russell as the residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army. The campus includes the main memorial museum in the former residence, a modern library building, and the Centre for Contemporary Studies. The grounds feature the famous Teen Murti (Three Statues) memorial, landscaped gardens, and the historic study and bedroom of Jawaharlal Nehru preserved as they were during his lifetime. The complex is situated near other important landmarks like the Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate.

The institution organizes a wide array of academic activities, including regular seminars, lectures, and international conferences on themes related to modern history, politics, and society. It hosts the prestigious Nehru Memorial Lecture, delivered by eminent personalities such as Nelson Mandela and Amartya Sen. The institution operates as an autonomous body under the administrative control of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It is governed by an Executive Council chaired by the Prime Minister of India, with members including noted historians, academics, and senior government officials. The day-to-day administration is headed by a Director, supported by a team of librarians, archivists, and research officers. Key administrative decisions and policy directions are overseen by committees such as the Purchase Committee and the Building Committee, ensuring the institution's alignment with its mandate as a national memorial and a centre for advanced research.
