National Taiwan University. It is the most prestigious and comprehensive public research university in Taiwan. History

The institution was founded in 1928 as Taihoku Imperial University under the administration of the Empire of Japan. After the surrender of Japan and the retrocession of Taiwan to the Republic of China in 1945, it was reorganized and renamed. Its post-war development was significantly shaped by former president Fu Ssu-nien, who emphasized academic freedom and established its core ethos. The university expanded rapidly during the latter half of the 20th century, mirroring Taiwan's economic miracle, and solidified its role as a cradle for the nation's political and intellectual leadership.

The university comprises 11 colleges, including the College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, and College of Engineering. Landmarks include the iconic Fu Bell, the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and the expansive Lotus Pond. The university also maintains the National Taiwan University Hospital complex, agricultural farms in Nantou County, and a marine research station on Penghu. The sprawling grounds are famous for their lush greenery, including the renowned Royal Palm Boulevard and the Azalea Festival.

Organization and administration

The university is governed under the University Act of the Republic of China. Its chief executive is the president, currently Wen-Chang Chen, who oversees six vice presidents responsible for academic affairs, research, and student life. The supreme academic authority is the University Council, which includes representatives from faculty, students, and administrative staff. Financially, it receives substantial support from the Ministry of Education and competitive grants from the National Science and Technology Council.

Notable alumni and faculty

Its alumni network is exceptionally influential, encompassing numerous heads of state such as former presidents Lee Teng-hui and Ma Ying-jeou. Other distinguished graduates include Nobel laureate in chemistry Yuan T. Lee, entrepreneur and founder of ASUS Jonney Shih, and acclaimed filmmaker Ang Lee. Prominent faculty have included historian and educator Fu Ssu-nien, mathematician and former president of Academia Sinica Shing-Tung Yau, and epidemiologist Jong-Khing Huang.

Rankings and reputation

It consistently ranks as the top university in Taiwan and among the elite in Asia. Globally, it is positioned within the top 100 by several major ranking systems, including the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It receives high marks for its research output, employer reputation, and citations per faculty.
