History

The institution's origins trace back to 1910 when a collection was started by members of the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society, later known as the East African Natural History Society. The first dedicated building opened in 1930, with significant support from the Coryndon Museum, named after former Governor Robert Coryndon. Following Kenyan independence, it was renamed in 1964. A major renovation and expansion project, funded in part by the Government of Kenya and the European Union, was completed in 2008, transforming the facility into a modern cultural center under the leadership of the National Museums of Kenya.

The Cradle of Humankind exhibit displays pivotal hominin fossils from sites like Koobi Fora and Olorgesailie, linked to the work of renowned paleoanthropologists such as Louis Leakey and Richard Leakey. The History of Kenya gallery covers pre-colonial societies, the Swahili coast trade, the British East Africa period, and the Mau Mau Uprising. Other major exhibits include the Cycles of Life gallery exploring cultural rites, the Birds of East Africa hall, and the Art Gallery featuring works by modern artists like Elimo Njau and Paa ya Paa Art Centre. The Fossil Hominids of Kenya collection is of particular global significance.

Research and cultural institutions

The museum serves as the administrative headquarters for the National Museums of Kenya, which oversees numerous regional sites like Fort Jesus and the Kariandusi Museum. It co-locates several major research institutions, including the East African Herbarium, a critical resource for botany, and the Institute of Primate Research. The complex also contains the Nairobi Planetarium, one of the oldest in Africa, and the Paleontology Department, which collaborates with international bodies such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Max Planck Institute. These entities support ongoing work in fields like archaeology, taxonomy, and biodiversity conservation.

Located off the Uhuru Highway on Museum Hill, it is easily accessible from Nairobi's city center and major hotels.
