N8 Group

N8 Group. The N8 Group, formally known as the N8 Research Partnership, is a strategic alliance of eight research-intensive universities in Northern England. Established to enhance collaborative research, drive innovation, and stimulate economic growth, it is one of the most prominent regional research consortia in the United Kingdom. The partnership focuses on leveraging the combined expertise and infrastructure of its members to address major scientific and societal challenges.

History

The consortium was founded in 2007, emerging from earlier collaborative discussions among vice-chancellors in the North of England. Its creation was influenced by the success of other regional partnerships like the Russell Group and aimed to strengthen the position of northern universities in the competitive UK research landscape. Initial development was supported by funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFC E). A significant early milestone was the establishment of the N8 Industry Innovation Forum in 2010, which formalized links with major corporate partners such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever. The partnership has since expanded its scope, securing substantial investment for research facilities and programs, notably in fields like advanced materials and data analytics.

Structure and governance

The N8 Group operates under a board comprising the vice-chancellors or presidents of each member institution, with a rotating chairmanship. Day-to-day operations are managed by a central executive team based in York. Strategic direction is set through several thematic research committees, which coordinate large-scale collaborative projects across the partner universities. The governance model is designed to be agile, facilitating rapid response to funding opportunities from bodies like UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the European Commission. Member universities

The eight member institutions are all major research universities located across the North of England. From the North West, members include the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester, and Lancaster University. The Yorkshire and the Humber region is represented by the University of Leeds, the University of Sheffield, the University of York, and the Durham University. Completing the partnership from the North East is Newcastle University. Collectively, these institutions represent a significant concentration of academic power, housing numerous Research Excellence Framework (REF) top-rated departments and attracting substantial research income from organisations like the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
